K-State personal financial planning graduate receives Waddell & Reed Reimbursement Program Award

Submitted by Jodi Kaus

Powercat Financial Counseling peer counselor Kristen Payne, a 2016 graduate of K-State's personal financial planning program, received the Waddell & Reed Reimbursement Program Award for Certified Financial Planner Certification.

The $1,595 award breaks down to $595 toward reimbursement of the standard certified financial planner exam registration fee and $1,000 for reimbursement of a certified financial planner exam review course.

The reimbursement program for certified financial planner certification was established as part of Waddell & Reed's ongoing commitment to financial education. According to Investment News, a recent study found that 69 percent of those who completed a bachelor's or master's degree in financial planning had not taken the two-day comprehensive certified financial planner exam in the five years after graduation. Many of those surveyed noted the cost of the exam as a deterring factor in deciding whether or not to take it.

The Waddell & Reed Reimbursement Program for Certified Financial Planner Certification supports qualified financial planning graduates. To qualify, applicants must have completed two or more academic semesters as a Powercat Financial Counseling peer counselor, be nominated by the director of the Powercat Financial Counseling program, and have a 3.0 or higher on 4.0 scale or better overall grade point average. Awardees will have one year from the award date to take the exam in order to qualify for reimbursement. The award must be used to pay for the certification examination fee and corresponding fees for a exam review course.

CFP Board is a nonprofit certification organization with a mission to benefit the public by granting the certified financial planning certification and upholding it as the recognized standard of excellence for personal financial planning.
