K-State students present at the American Society for Nutrition conference

Six students from the College of Human Ecology presented their research April 2-6 at the American Society for Nutrition conference in San Diego, California.

These students conduct research with the Physical Activity and Nutrition Clinical Research Consortium, PAN-CRC, and are under the direct oversight of K-State faculty, including Mark Haub, professor and food, nutrition, dietetics and health department head; Sara Rosenkranz, assistant professor of food, nutrition, dietetics and health; Emily Mailey, assistant professor of kinesiology; Richard Rosenkranz, associate professor of food, nutrition, dietetics and health; and Craig Harms, professor and kinesiology department head.

The following students presented research projects at the scientific sessions: 

Kelsey Casey, master's degree graduate in human nutrition, presented "Changes in intake of CVD-related food components associated with an intervention to reduce sedentary time." Research team included Sara Rosenkranz, Emily Mailey, Alyssa Baquero Garcia, Aaron Swank and Richard Rosenkranz. Casey will begin doctoral work in human nutrition this summer.

Colby Teeman, doctoral student in human nutrition, presented "Does moderate intensity exercise in the postprandial period attenuate the inflammatory response to a high-fat meal?" Research team included Stephanie Kurti, Brooke Cull, Sam Emerson, Mark Haub and Sara Rosenkranz.

Sam Emerson, doctoral student in human nutrition, presented "Size and timing matter: differential triglyceride responses to three meal conditions." Research team included Stephanie Kurti, Colby Teeman, Emily Emerson, Brooke Cull, Mark Haub and Sara Rosenkranz.

Stephanie Kurti, doctoral student in kinesiology, presented "Post-prandial exhaled 8-isoprostane responses to meals of varying caloric and fat content in non-asthmatic, insufficiently active men." Research team included Sam Emerson, Sara Rosenkranz, Colby Teeman, Emily Emerson, Brooke Cull, Joshua Smith and Craig Harms.

Trias Mahmudiono, doctoral student in human nutrition, presented "Household Food Insecurity Access Scale, HFIAS, and Household Food Insecurity Access Prevalence, HFIAP, as predictor of Stunted Child and Overweight/Obese Mother, SCOWT, in urban Indonesia." Research team included D. Andrias, T. Nindya, H. Megatsari and Richard Rosenkranz. Mahmudiono was one of 12 finalists — out of 500 applicants — for the American Society for Nutrition's Graduate Student Research Award and a finalist for the society's Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science Award. He presented his doctoral work twice orally and once as a poster. Mahmudiono successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in April. 

Kourtney Foley, bachelor's degree graduate in dietetics, also presented for the first time at the conference. Foley worked closely with Stephanie Kurti, Craig Harms and Emily Mailey.
