Good morning, K-State!

dff

Here is an update about what is going on in the Teaching & Learning Center (TLC):

TLC Professional Development Series Is Going Strong – Join Us!

You will have the opportunity to earn a TLC Professional Development Certificate or be selected as a TLC Fellow as a result of your participation in this series.

We have offered seven events to date, and over 270 people have attended the events in person! We have explored many domains of teaching and learning and will explore many more. Zoom participation is available by request if you can’t attend in person, and the events will be cataloged on our TLC Canvas page.

Please email us (teachingandlearning@k-state.edu) if you would like an invitation to our TLC Professional Development Series Canvas Page. This will provide access to the videos of our professional development events, information about our Professional Development Series, and provide a forum for discussing topics related to teaching and learning.

Difficult Dialogues – A Series for K-State Faculty

The first session offered in the Difficult Dialogues Series – created by Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Bryan Samuel – was great! Dr. Kodee Walls, Interim Training Director and Biofeedback Coordinator for Kansas State University Counseling Services, discussed student mental health issues during a workshop with approximately 20 K-State faculty, staff, and students.

In collaboration with the Dow Center for Multicultural and Community Studies and the Teaching and Learning Center, the next Difficult Dialogues will take place 12:30-2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the K-State Student Union Bluemont Room.

Tara Coleman, K-State Libraries, and Brent Weaver, K-State First, will present "Situation Critical: Responding to Difficult Situations Through Role-play." Registration is required and lunch will be provided. Learn more and register on the Difficult Dialogues webpage.

Difficult Dialogues was created to help faculty make progress on their knowledge and skill in facilitating conversations in the classroom when difficult or challenging topics arise. The lunch and learn series will be piloted for the 2019-2020 year and cover topics such as mental health, race and ethnicity, gender sexual orientation and identity, and political divide/current events.

TLC Canvas Discussion of the Week

Our discussion question of the week is:

How do you take care of yourself through your mid-semester responsibilities?

Let us know if you have other questions you would like us to post.

TLC Highlighted Teacher

In each newsletter we will feature a K-Stater who is doing something special related to teaching and learning. This time, our TLC Highlighted Teacher is Tara Coleman.

“My name is Tara Coleman. I am an Associate Professor for K-State Libraries. When I’m not helping patrons at the reference desk, I coordinator of the Libraries’ Dow Center for Multicultural and Community Studies and chair the K-State Book Network (KSBN), the university’s common reading program.

I love working with students and strive to make finding information and learning new things an engaging activity that will lead to lifelong learning. Youth advocacy and first year student success is important to me and I try to use my experience and knowledge to create a space that will help students thrive.” -- Tara Coleman (Associate Professor, K-State Libraries)
