TLC Bi-Weekly Newsletter for Tuesday, February 14th, 2023

Greetings, K-Staters!

We are now in the fifth week of the Spring 2023 semester, and the Teaching & Learning Center (TLC) would like to remind you of our commitment to support your efforts in teaching, mentoring, and advising. We are excited to announce the various priorities, events, and resources that are designed to advance teaching and learning at K-State. This video explains what the TLC can do for you.

SoTL Shocase

Be on the lookout for information about our Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Showcase. We plan to host this event closer toward the end of the semester, similar to last year. Stay tuned for more details!

TLC Highlighted Teacher

Our highlighted teacher this month is Krishna Ghimire, Teaching Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering. He has a strong passion for teaching and love for students. He believes that a sincere effort to make a positive change in students lays the foundation for great teaching and learning experiences. His teaching philosophy has evolved from his industry experience and making a strong connection with students so that they have a positive, accessible, and inclusive learning environment. He teaches courses that transform students into engineers. He has been recognized for his excellence in teaching and service, most recently, by the Above and Beyond Instructor Award.

He delivers lectures in varieties of ways to match students’ different learning preferences. His typical lectures include the following elements.

  1. An orientation on the course content answering why it is important and how it relates to prior knowledge

  2. Clear and measurable learning objectives

  3. Opportunities for critical thinking to process information about the subject

  4. Models and demonstrations (physical, animations, videos, etc.)

  5. Opportunities to apply knowledge in a familiar context and also in a new and unfamiliar context

  6. Opportunities for self-assessment and feedback on student performance

Programs & Events

The Professional Development (PD) Series will occur on Wednesdays at 12 noon via Zoom. All events are free, and no registration is required. The schedule is periodically updated on the Upcoming Events page of our website and on our social media: Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. We hope to see you there.

  • On Wednesday, February 15th, Trina Knight, from the Center for Advocacy, Response and Education (CARE), will lead a Need-To-Know event entitled, “Sexual Assault & Relationship Violence On Campus: Staying Informed and Empowered in the Classroom.” As instructors, it is very important that we are familiar with available campus resources to direct our students toward as needed.
  • On Wednesday, February 22nd, Eva Horne will lead an event entitled, “Principles of Biology: From studio to online.” We hope to see you there!

If you are interested in earning a PD Certificate or in becoming a TLC Fellow for this academic year, check out the requirements on our website.

Assessment Showcase

Looking ahead, the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment will host their Assessment Showcase on March 7th, 2023 from 8am-12pm in the Union. This event will include a workshop, award announcements, and presentation sessions. Click here to see their flyer with more information.

Engage the Sage Videos to Support Excellent Teaching

We would like to remind you of several video resources as part of Dr. Don Saucier’s YouTube channel, Engage the Sage, that are particularly relevant at the beginning of the semester:

Thank You & Encouragement
