Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Apply for federal aid

Applying for financial aid almost always begins with completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When students submit the FAFSA, they are applying for federal financial aid including grants, work-study funding, and loans.

The U.S. Federal Department of Education uses the information students, parents of students, and/or spouses of students provide on the FAFSA to determine the students' eligibility for federal financial aid. Many states, including Kansas, also use the FAFSA to determine your eligibility for state financial aid programs.

It's free

As the name implies, the FAFSA is free! There are no fees to process the FAFSA and students are encouraged to complete the application each year.

Available October 1

October 1 is the date the FAFSA opens each year to apply for aid for the following academic year.

Get a FSA ID

Students, parents, and borrowers are required to use an FSA ID, made up of a username and password, to access certain U.S. Department of Education websites including the FAFSA. Your FSA ID is used to confirm your identity when accessing your financial aid information and electronically signing your federal student aid documents. It is best to get an FSA ID as early as you can. Both the student and a parent (if you are a dependent student) will need an FSA ID to sign your FAFSA electronically.

K-State Federal School Code 001928

The results of a student's FAFSA are electronically sent to Kansas State University when our Federal School Code of 001928 is included on the FAFSA.

Priority date December 1

The K-State priority date to complete and submit the FAFSA is December 1 prior to the following academic year.
