Laboratory Inspection Program
The Kansas State University (KSU) Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Research and Laboratory Safety Program inspects all campus laboratories and research locations for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and industry best practices in laboratory safety. The KSU Laboratory Inspection Program will start inspecting campus laboratories in 2024.
Laboratory inspections are a collaborative process between laboratory group members, department safety coordinators, and EHS staff. All members of the laboratory are encouraged to attend and participate in each laboratory inspection. The collaborative process involves learning about the laboratory operations and goals, working through the laboratory inspection checklist together, and discussing any opportunities to implement control measures that support laboratory safety, quality, security. Each laboratory inspection checklist item is associated with one or more regulatory requirements or industry best practices that Kansas State University has adopted for the safety of all laboratory citizens. We appreciate the support and collaboration of all laboratory groups on campus and department safety coordinators to make Kansas State University laboratories and research locations safe for all.
Inspections are scheduled by email for each laboratory. Laboratory inspections will be scheduled for 1-2 hours depending on laboratory size and complexity. The laboratory PI and department safety coordinator will be contacted with the contact information provided to EHS through the Laboratory Hazard Assessment form. Please let us know if any laboratory contact information needs to be updated by emailing safety@ksu.edu or calling 785-532-5856. We will update your laboratory sign to reflect any new contact information and share this new sign with you for printing and posting.
The current laboratory inspection checklist items are linked below. As regulations and recommendations are updated, EHS will update the inspection checklist, recommendations, and references to reflect these updates.
Inspection findings will be discussed at the conclusion of each inspection to provide the opportunity to work toward solutions collaboratively. We recognize how diverse and unique laboratory goals, processes, and infrastructure are to each laboratory group.
Please contact EHS if you have questions about any findings or suggestions for remediation.
