Our results show that recognizable scene images produce very strong scene gist masking (Loschky et al., 2007; Loschky et al., 2010). Recognizable masks cause stronger masking than unrecognizable masks with the same spatial frequency and orientation information. This suggests that recognizable meaning may also cause masking.
