All Wildcats welcome at Find Your Calling
Explore who you are, what you bring, and the path that will help you get there.
Finding a calling doesn't always happen in a straight line. For some, it begins with a lifelong interest. For others, it takes unexpected experiences, meaningful relationships or a willingness to try something new.
Those journeys are at the heart of "Callings", by Dave Isay, Kansas State University's 2026 common book. The book shares stories of people from different generations and backgrounds who have discovered meaningful work and the experiences that led them there.
Inspired by the book, K-State First and campus partners will host Find Your Calling from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the K-State Student Union Ballroom. The event is open to all Wildcats, especially first-year students, and will offer opportunities to connect with others, reflect on personal goals and explore resources that can help students prepare for their futures.
Since 2010, K-State First has selected an annual common book to give first-year students a shared experience that encourages academic growth, personal reflection and connections across the university community.
"Callings" explores how people discover purpose in their work and the experiences that shape their paths. Isay, founder of StoryCorps, shares conversations between friends, colleagues and family members about the decisions, challenges and unexpected opportunities that helped them find fulfilling careers.
The book's message is especially relevant to students who are beginning to explore their interests, consider career possibilities and think about what comes after graduation.
"We've had a wonderful response to "Callings" across the K-State community. This event gives students a chance to see that finding your calling is a journey and to learn from K-State students, faculty and staff who are at different points along that path," said Tara Coleman, K-State First book coordinator. "The social after the event will give students a chance to make new friends who will follow them on that journey."
The event also supports the university's Next-Gen K-State strategic plan and its emphasis on preparing students for success beyond graduation. By bringing students together with faculty, staff and campus resources, Find Your Calling encourages participants to consider how their interests, values and experiences can shape their academic and professional goals.
What to expect at Find Your Calling
The evening will begin with music and activities during check-in, followed by a brief program featuring K-State students, faculty and staff who will share their perspectives on "Callings" and their own experiences finding purpose in their work and lives.
Attendees will then participate in small-group discussions led by trained facilitators. These conversations will give participants an opportunity to reflect on the book, share their experiences and explore how relationships, campus involvement and personal values can influence their future paths.
Following the program, attendees are invited to a social hosted by the Union Program Council, featuring cookies, drinks and opportunities to continue conversations and make new connections.
All Wildcats are welcome to attend. Register by Sunday, Nov. 15.
Volunteer as a small-group facilitator
K-State students, faculty and staff are also invited to serve as small-group facilitators during the event.
Facilitators will guide conversations inspired by "Callings," helping participants reflect on their experiences, share perspectives and build connections with others.
Training will be provided, and facilitators will receive a Find Your Calling T-shirt.
Sign up to serve as a facilitator by Friday, Oct. 23.
Facilitators must attend one of the following in-person training sessions in the Leadership Studies Building:
