Building your path: Resources for academic and career planning

Students can receive free professional clothing at the K-State Career Closet, located in the Career Center in the Berney Family Welcome Center.

While the spring semester has just started, now is a great time for students to prepare for their next steps. Whether looking toward the fall 2026 semester or life after graduation, planning for success takes advance work. The Division of Academic Success and Student Affairs provides guidance at every stage, from preparing for a new year or further education to entering the workforce.

Schedule an academic advising meeting

All students are required to meet with their academic advisor at least once per semester. Students are in control of their academic career, and advisors are prepared to help them navigate the route. Advisors help students enroll in courses, map out a plan of action, develop critical thinking skills and make decisions regarding their academic career. Students can connect with their advisors by logging in to Navigate and locating the advisor list under the Resources button.

Prepare for professional program applications

Students considering a career in a professional field — such as law, medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, dentistry, nursing or veterinary medicine — should connect with a pre-professional advisor. Separate from their academic advisor, a pre-professional advisor provides guidance and programming to students with a pre-professional designation. Connect with the Pre-Professional and Exploratory Advising Center in 114 Berney Family Welcome Center or via email at ppac@k-state.edu.

Navigate changing majors or exploring careers

Exploratory Studies Advising offers students a proactive, reflective approach to choosing academic majors and career paths. Visit them in the Berney Family Welcome Center, or email ppac@k-state.edu. Drop-in hours are available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and check-in can be completed at the Career Center front desk.

Build career-readiness skills

The Career Center improves students' career readiness, equipping them to confidently step into life after graduation. At the Career Center, students have access to job search training, resume critiques, career advising, employer connections and more. To get started, students should set up a free Handshake account and schedule a time to meet with an advisor; some drop-in services are also available. In addition, students can utilize the Career Closet for free professional clothing and the Iris photography booth for free professional headshots.
