K-State honors global engagement leaders during International Education Week
International Education Week celebrates the efforts of campus leaders to enhance Kansas State University's global engagement. This year's honorees include an accomplished faculty member and a student-support team that advances the university's international mission every day.
John Leslie, University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology in the College of Agriculture, is the 2025 International Educator of the Year. The Office of International Programs, in collaboration with the provost's office, created this award in 2003 to honor individuals who demonstrate a sustained commitment to international education at K-State.
Leslie has spent more than four decades expanding K-State's international reach through research, teaching and collaboration. Reflecting on the award, he said, "I am honored and very happy for the international part of my life to be recognized with this award from K-State."
A nominator emphasized the global scale of his work, stating that "during his 41 years at K-State, he has managed or been an intimate part of international projects in 15 different countries." His career encompasses long-term partnerships across Africa, Asia, Central America and Europe, as well as leadership roles in major scientific organizations.
Cary Fowler, U.S. Special Envoy for Global Food Security, praised Leslie's impact during his service as a Jefferson Science Fellow. "John ensured that this country's diplomatic efforts on behalf of global food security were on a sound scientific basis," Fowler said.
Grant Chapman, associate provost for international programs, highlighted Leslie's leadership. "Dr. Leslie's contribution to international programs at K-State is highlighted by his work with the Fulbright Australia Program and his leadership in hosting international Fusarium workshops," he said.
K-State will recognize Leslie during the All-University Awards Ceremony in spring 2026.
Student Support and Accountability, part of the Division of Academic Success and Student Affairs, has been honored with the 2025 Outstanding Support for International Initiatives Award. The Office of International Programs established this award in 2013 to recognize campus units that enhance global engagement and support international and education abroad students.
Over the past year, the Student Support and Accountability team strengthened K-State's international efforts by providing coordinated support for students studying abroad and international students and scholars on campus. The team worked quickly and thoughtfully through complex situations, ensuring that students received the guidance they needed.
"We recognize the Student Support and Accountability team for its dedication toward our students—including those studying abroad and our international students and scholars," said Chapman.
Andy Thompson, assistant vice president and senior associate dean of students, expressed gratitude for the recognition. "We greatly value our partnership with International Programs and are honored to be recognized with this award," he said.
The award's previous recipients include the Feed the Future Innovation Lab, the Office of First-Generation Students, and the College of Veterinary Medicine.
