K-State launches new resources to prevent and report hazing

Kansas State University has introduced new resources to comply with the federal Stop Campus Hazing Act, or SCHA, including a centralized website, reporting tools and training opportunities for all members of the university community.

Signed into law on Dec. 23, 2024, the SCHA requires universities to improve hazing prevention and transparency. Compliance efforts must be in place by June 23, 2025. The act focuses on:

  • Including hazing statistics in the university’s annual Clery Report.
  • Establishing research-based hazing education and prevention programs.
  • Publishing a Campus Hazing Transparency Report outlining incidents where recognized student organizations were found in violation of hazing policies.

Hazing can occur in any student organization, athletic team or extracurricular activity. K-State will host several events during National Hazing Prevention Week to raise awareness:

Tabling in the K-State Student Union

  • Stop by from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 24 and 26 to trace your hands as part of the interactive “These Hands Don’t Haze” pledge and pick up free resources like buttons and bracelets.

National Hazing Prevention Staff Training

  • This session, from 1-4:30 p.m. Sept. 25 in the Student Union, Bluemont Room, covers how to identify and prevent hazing, with best practices rooted in more than a decade of research. Registration can be completed online.

The Five Great Myths of Hazing Keynote

  • From 7-8 p.m. Sept. 25 in McCain Auditorium, Gentry McCreary will address misconceptions about hazing and share practical steps to challenge harmful group dynamics. Learn more about the keynote and register online.

The new hazing prevention website provides policies, reporting options, awareness resources and the transparency report. It also features a Canvas course open to all members of the university community.
