Sawin Arts Extension
Extending the arts beyond campus and into Kansas communities
The Sawin Arts Extension connects Kansas State University students and faculty with partners across Kansas—especially in rural and underserved communities—through performances, workshops, side-by-side learning experiences, and arts-based wellness initiatives.
Instrument Repair and School Music Support
Instrument repair and maintenance are central to the Sawin Arts Extension’s work with rural Kansas schools.
K-State students and staff provide basic instrument evaluation, cleaning, repair, and maintenance for school music programs where access to repair services may be limited. This work helps keep instruments safe and playable so that students can fully participate in band and orchestra programs, while also offering hands-on service-learning experiences for K-State students.

Instrument Service Partnerships
As part of our broader instrument support work, we also engage in service partnerships such as Band of Angels — Instrument Service Day, where K-State students help inspect and prepare donated instruments for redistribution to students in need.

Rural Teacher Collaboration
Through our Rural Teacher Collaboration initiatives, K-State music education students partner with rural schools that do not have full-time music teachers. Students assist with classroom instruction, ensemble rehearsals, and short-term teaching needs—supporting local programs while gaining meaningful field experience.

K-State String Academy
The K-State String Academy expands access to string instruction for young musicians, including students in rural Kansas communities. The program provides local ensemble experiences, coaching, and mentorship connected to university-level instruction as well as opportunities in areas where private lessons and string programs may be limited.
