Biography

Hailed as one of “Singapore’s finest operatic talents,” tenor David Charles Tay is recognized for his stylistic versatility, compelling stage presence and vocal artistry described as “delightful in warmth and impressive in projection.” His work encompasses opera, concert and recital repertoire, with performances across Asia, Europe and the United States.

In 2025, Tay appeared as Jason in Charpentier’s Médée as part of the Voilah! Festival commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations between France and Singapore. Upcoming engagements include performances with the Atlanta Opera in the newly commissioned opera Rosenbaum and Li in June 2026, and a return to the Italian repertory as Alfredo in Verdi’s La traviata in Singapore in October 2026. In the United States, he has performed with the Bronx Opera Company, Bare Opera, dell’Arte Opera Ensemble, The Center for Contemporary Opera and American Opera Projects, and was a featured artist with the Metropolitan Opera Guild from 2020 to 2023. He made his American operatic debut in the U.S. premiere of Paisiello’s Nina, o sia pazza per amore at the Manhattan School of Music.

His recent operatic engagements include the Male Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia, Eumete in Il ritorno d’Ulisse, Tito in La clemenza di Tito, Florestan in Fidelio, the Dwarf in Der Zwerg, Alessandro in Il re pastore and Bardolfo in Falstaff, for which Opera News praised him as “a vocal standout.” His portrayal of Arnalta in L’incoronazione di Poppea was similarly noted by Opera News as “hypnotic, affecting and amusing,” sung with “bold clarity.” Additional roles include Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, Fritz in L’amico Fritz, Peter Quint in The Turn of the Screw, Harlequin in Der Kaiser von Atlantis, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Piquillo in La Périchole, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus and Pluto in Orpheus in the Underworld.

A committed interpreter of contemporary music, Tay recently performed Nico Muhly’s Stranger with the Avalon String Quartet and Impossible Things with the Wayfarer Sinfonietta in Singapore. Other notable appearances include Thomas Cabaniss’ Firesongs at National Sawdust, Victoria Bond’s Gulliver’s Travels with American Opera Projects and the world premieres of Mark Alan Taggart’s Swan’s Inlet and Tony Manfredonia’s Ghost Variations.

His concert repertoire includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Coffee Cantata, Easter Oratorio and St. Matthew Passion, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella and Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings.

Tay is also the Artistic Director of The Opera People, one of Singapore’s leading independent opera companies. Under his leadership, the company has developed a reputation for innovative programming that engages contemporary audiences through interdisciplinary collaboration, accessibility initiatives and socially responsive performance-making. Since 2018, The Opera People has produced eight seasons of programming, including ten full-length operas, the recital series In Our Manner of Speaking, and numerous digital and commissioned works.

Alongside his performing career, Tay is an established voice teacher, vocal coach, and choral clinician. Since 2011, he has served as vocal coach for the Anglo-Chinese Junior College Choir and its alumni ensemble, preparing singers for concerts, recordings, international tours and competitions, including award-winning appearances at the Tampere Vocal Music Festival and the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod. He is regularly invited to lead workshops and masterclasses for school, university and community ensembles in Singapore and abroad.
