Channel 8 News alumni take over "Good Day Kansas"

It’s not unusual for broadcast students from the A.Q Miller School of Media and Communication to work for the same company as one another after graduating, but thanks to KSN-TV’s “Good Day Kansas” show, a pair of graduates have taken this idea to the next level on the air.

Beginning October 2022, Bri Smith ‘19 has teamed up with Avery Osen ’17, ‘19 as co-hosts of “Good Day Kansas,” airing on KSN-TV in Wichita (Market 70). Together, the two K-State graduates will cover a variety of lifestyle topics featuring people and businesses from across the state.

Osen, originally from Winfield, Kansas, started with the station in June 2021, joining Jillian Carol on “Good Day Kansas.” When Carol moved on to other opportunities, he was left without a partner.

When Smith, a native of Larned, Kansas, learned of the vacancy, she said, “Actually this is amazing! I've been looking for opportunities like this.” She applied and earned the spot in the chair next to Osen.

Osen, a graduate of Winfield High School, earned an associate degree from Cowley College, and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism and mass communications from Kansas State University. While at K-State he was heavily involved with K-StateHD.tv and Channel 8 News. He also wrote for the Collegian Media Group and was a leader and mentor to his fellow students. After completing his master’s degree, Osen taught for the department as an adjunct professor while he also wrote for the Associated Press, covering the Kansas City Royals and major college sports, including the K-State Wildcats.

Smith returned to K-State after a short hiatus, changing her major to journalism and getting involved with television opportunities on campus, including K-StateHD.tv and Channel 8 News. She completed her degree while raising her young daughter. After graduating from college in 2019, Bri pursued a career as a news reporter at KAKE-TV in Wichita. She said that growing up, she always loved telling stories and hanging out with friends and family. She now spends most of her free time with her beautiful and spunky daughter.

Both Smith and Osen continue to be Wildcat fans and supporters of the School of Media and Communication.
