Hieu Nguyen

B.S. Biology/Pre-Medicine, Minor in Psychology 2023.

He previously completed a Pathways Internship Project in the USDA-ARS Hard Winter Wheat Genetics Research Unit with Dr. Mary Guttieri. Hieu was the recipient of a University Scholar Award, State of Kansas Scholarship, June Hull Sherrid Scholarship in Biology and a Duane and Bonnie Saunders Scholarship. He received a College of Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Research Award and a Most Promising Student Award in Spring 2021, and a Cancer Research Award (2021-22), K-INBRE Research Scholarship (2021-22), and TRIO Ronald E. McNair Scholarship in Summer 2022. Projects: “Molecular mechanisms driving elongation growth in the plant epidermis”, and "Optimization of genome editing of a developmental pathway in Arabidopsis". Hieu's other passion was working at Cats' Cupboard and serving as a Wellcat Ambassador. He was a finalist for the Kyle Pelton Student Employee of the Year Award in 2022-23. Hieu was accepted into the first cohort of students for the Scholars in Urban Health program and started at KU School of Medicine in July 2024.
