Leadership Studies Minor

Learn to Lead & Make Change

Through K-State's interdisciplinary minor in leadership studies, our innovative faculty will challenge you to exercise leadership in the moment. You will not find a typical classroom experience. Instead, you will build confidence in your ability to innovate change and inspire diverse groups of people to come together for the common good.

A Great Complement to Your Major

Pairing the 16-credit-hour leadership studies minor with your major sets you apart from other professionals. It will enhance your coursework, giving you the confidence to exercise leadership in your career, community, and personal life. And with smart planning, students can often achieve the minor through coursework already required by their academic major, resulting in very little additional investment.

The Minor, At A Glance

Core Courses, 11 credit hours

LEAD 212: Introduction to Leadership Concepts, 3 credit hours  Human Diversity

In LEAD 212 we will work to understand leadership competences, theories, and frameworks to further your self-awareness, values, and purpose. We will engage in a collaborative learning community to exercise socially-responsible leadership.

LEAD 350: Culture and Context in Leadership, 3 credit hours  Global Issues Human Diversity

Leadership behavior and practice varies across cultures and contexts. In LEAD 350, we will unpack cultural identity, life experience, and world views on leadership relationships. We will practice inclusive leadership through advocacy for social change.

LEAD 405: Leadership in Practice, 2 credit hours  Ethical Reasoning

Through practice, we will work to understand the process of facilitating change in self, others, and systems. In LEAD 405, we will develop the capacity to exercise leadership to make progress on personal and community issues.

LEAD 450: Senior Seminar in Leadership Studies, 3 credit hours  Social Sciences Ethical Reasoning

In this capstone course, we will integrate and apply learning from the minor. We will focus on personal values and current events, analyzing them through the lens of ethical dimensions of leadership.

Elective Courses, minimum of 5 credit hours

In addition to the four core courses, select a minimum of 5 credit hours from a list of elective courses that complement your academic major.

Nonprofit Focus Option

The Staley School of Leadership Studies also offers the undergraduate minor with a nonprofit focus to prepare students to exercise leadership in today's rapidly growing non-profit sector.
