Mock Pura Belpré

On Saturday, November 16, (12-1:30 PM) will be our first Mock Pura Belpré where we view, discuss, and vote on the best Latinx picture books of 2024. We have versions of all books in English so everyone can participate. Video links to book readings to follow.

We're hoping to guess winners before January when the American Library Association announces Pura Belpré Awards to "a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth."

We'll finish up with snacks and drinks (1:30-2:30 PM) and the Dept. of English's Mock Caldecott will immediately follow. All activities are free, open to the public, and will take place at the Manhattan Public Library. Book information will be posted on the Instagram account the_promise_of_fantasy leading up to the event.

Cheese Tasting Flyer The Kirmser Language Center in the modern languages department invites celebrating the National French Week with a cheese tasting event.

Come and learn about the National French Week and the importance of cheese in the French culture. This come-and-go event is open to students, faculty and community members of all language backgrounds. There will be a cultural presentation, games, and French cheese tasting.

¡Cuenta cuentos! Tell Tales! Spanish Bilingual Story time

This story time is suggested for ages 3-8. We will tell great tales and look at some beautiful illustrations, focusing on books by Latinx authors and illustrators. Everyone will be able to enjoy stories and join in the fun.

Acompáñanos a la hora del cuento y manualidad/actividad, ¡Cuenta cuentos!, en español e inglés para niñas/os de 3 años en adelante. Contaremos cuentos maravillosos y veremos bellas ilustraciones creadas por autores e ilustradores latinos. ¡Cuenta cuentos! es una actividad apta para hablantes biligües, de español, de inglés o de otros idiomas.

Multicultural Chocofest - KLC event

The Kirmser Language Center in the modern languages department invites to our Multicultural Chocofest: A celebration of the importance of chocolate in different cultures.

Come and explore the history of chocolate and how it has become an important element in different cultures. This come-and-go event is open to students, faculty and community members of all language backgrounds. There will be games, prizes and chocolate samples from different countries.

Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) - KLC Event

The Day of the Dead Flyer The Kirmser Language Center in the modern languages department invites to Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) celebration.

Come and learn the history of this important celebration in the Mexican culture. This come-and-go event is open to students, faculty and community members of all language backgrounds. There will be a cultural presentation, games, nichos (wooden altars), Mexican pastries like pan de muerto, and Mexican hot chocolate.

Elle-Máijá TailFeathers: The Radical Hope of Decolonizaed Indigenous Cinema and the Movement away from Extractive Storytellin

Drums are considered sacred among many Indigenous peoples. They represent a pulse—the heartbeat of animals, people, and Mother Earth. If the feeling of a heartbeat could exist in a filmmaker, it would be Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, a proud award-winning Blackfoot and Sámi woman. She is an actor, producer, director, writer, storyteller, and advocate for her Kainai First Nation (Blood Tribe, Blackfoot Confederacy) and Sámi (Norway) communities. Much of her work is a response to the injustices happening in her Kainai community and a reflection of their resilience. This presentation seeks to explore Tailfeathers’ radical approach to reimagining the process of filmmaking into collaborative forms centering cinema as a tool for healing and hope. She is a force of nature in front of and behind the lens. Devoted to the authentic representation of women, and Indigenous peoples, she empowers artists to shift the narratives– to change the stories that can be told, and who can tell them.
