New Title IX regulations released by Office for Civil Rights, Department of Education

Submitted by Office of Institutional Equity

Kansas State University endeavors to maintain academic, housing and work environments that are free of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, domestic and dating violence and stalking. The university strives to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all, in line with its land-grant mission of service and education.

On April 19, the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights released new regulations under Title IX, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity, including K-State. The new regulations mandate how universities must investigate and adjudicate reports of sexual harassment under Title IX.

K-State's existing policy, PPM 3010, is currently in compliance with Title IX, but will require review to align with the new regulatory requirements. The new regulations will take effect on Aug. 1. As in the past, the university will comply with federal law and develop policies that support our students, faculty and staff.

Following this announcement, the university formed a work group to review the new regulations and ensure K-State's anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies and practices fully comply with the new regulations.

The work group is comprised of the following persons: Justin Frederick, director of the Office of Institutional Equity and Title IX coordinator; Stephanie Foran, assistant director of the CARE Office; Erin Sommer Good, associate general counsel; Tanya Gonzalez, associate provost for institutional effectiveness; Amanda McDiffett, assistant vice president for human resources operations strategy; Andy Thompson, assistant vice president and senior associate dean; Kristin Waller, senior associate athletics director and deputy Title IX coordinator; and Ryan Van Dusen, compliance and conflict resolution manager.

K-State values input from all campus constituents, and in the weeks to come the university will consider how best to invite discussion on the regulations with a variety of campus stakeholders.
