Three finance students from Kansas State University's College of Business Administration won the regional competition in the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute Research Challenge in Kansas City, Missouri.

Students on the winning team include Alex Drone, junior in finance, certificate in professional strategic selling, Lenexa; Josh Glunt, junior in finance and accounting, certificate in professional strategic selling, Shawnee; and Janis Asaris, junior in finance, minor in entrepreneurship, Riga, Latvia.

The Chartered Financial Analyst, or CFA, Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition where students conduct financial research and are tested on their analytical, valuation, report-writing and presentation skills. The competition provides students hands-on experience and training in financial analysis and professional ethics. In addition to the competition, students receive mentoring from industry practitioners and gain real-world experience as research analysts.

The team was competing against students from Missouri State, University of Missouri-Kansas City and Truman State University, many of whom were Master of Business Administration students. The K-State team will go on to compete in sub-regionals later this spring.

"All three team members rose to the occasion and used the skills they developed in our financial scholar program to create a high-quality research report," said Brian Silverstein, clinical assistant professor of finance. "In addition to the research report, our team delivered an outstanding presentation of their findings last Saturday, which won over the judges and secured first place in the competition. As their faculty advisor, I am highly impressed with the depth and insightfulness of their analysis, which is on par with superb professional research. I look forward to advising them in the next stages of the competition."
