Kris Shewmaker named inaugural associate director for scholarships

Submitted by Karen Goos

After a national search, Kris Shewmaker has been appointed as the inaugural associate director for scholarships for the university.

Shewmaker previously served as the assistant director for athletic compliance in the Office of Student Financial Assistance. Shewmaker brings more than eight years of experience with progressive roles in financial aid, including serving both as a financial aid advisor and assistant director of scholarships for San Diego State University prior to coming to K-State.

"With Kris's strong background in both customer service and managing scholarships, we believe he will be able to enhance our scholarship unit to support our continued strategic enrollment management efforts," said Karen Goos, vice provost for enrollment management. "Affordability continues to be a university priority, and our ability to effectively resource this unit to support our overall university goals is paramount to our success as a university."

The inaugural position was developed to increase support and provide additional leadership to K-State's scholarship team and will oversee four positions, including the athletics liaison coordinator, KSU Foundation scholarship coordinator, university merit scholarship coordinator and scholarship specialist.

In the new role, Shewmaker will lead the development, coordination and successful implementation of a scholarship program that supports the enrollment management goals of the university, including institutional, state and privately sourced scholarships, athletic awards and merit-based tuition waivers. He will provide scholarship communication and customer service to stakeholders, prospective and current students, and university and college departments. He will also partner with alumni and the KSU Foundation to ensure the smooth delivery of impactful funds to students.

"I look forward to contributing to the advancement of K-State's current and future scholarship objectives to most positively impact our students' futures," Shewmaker said.
