The President's Committee on Religion, Spirituality and Nonreligious Diversity presents the global observance information for Oct. 24-30.
Oct. 24 Diwali – Hindu – Jain – Sikh
The Festival of Lights commemorates the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. It typically begins on the night of the darkest day of the lunar month. As it is celebrated by several faiths spread over multiple countries, traditions are diverse. Nevertheless, common features include the lighting of candles, gathering of families, and feasting. In India, Diwali is often celebrated over five days.
*Note: Different branches of this religion celebrate on different days.
Oct. 26 Baha'i
Honors the founder of the Babi religion in mid-19th century Persia — now known as Iran. Babi's message is said to have created much upheaval for several years. Babi was the forerunner to Baha'u'llah and the Baha'i faith. See more information on the Baha'i faith.
