Celebrate American Archives Month with K-State Libraries

Submitted by Cailin Riley

Throughout October, the Richard L. D. and Marjorie J. Morse Department of Special Collections at K-State Libraries is recognizing American Archives Month. This month celebrates the importance of historical records and their enduring value and also recognizes the people and programs responsible for maintaining them.

Special Collections and University Archives is on the fifth floor of Hale Library and is currently open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Materials in Special Collections are available for anyone to use.

The Special Collections staff, which includes librarians and a team of archivists, works to acquire, preserve and provide access to records relating to the consumer movement, cookery, Kansas life and culture and K-State history.

  • The Consumer Movement Archives includes the records of individuals and organizations that advocate for the rights and welfare of consumers.
  • The cookery collection at Kansas State University is the largest collection of its kind that is available at a public university. It includes more than 38,000 volumes related to cookery dating from 1487 to present.
  • The Kansas life and culture collection contains documents that highlight Kansas history, agriculture and rural life.
  • The university archives relate to the history of K-State, including institutional and administrative records and the papers of faculty, staff, students and affiliated organizations.

Staff and faculty in the department have been recognized for several accomplishments and service relating to the archives.
