Teaching and Learning Center to host inclusive teaching book club

Submitted by Tanya Gonzalez

Inclusive Teaching Book Cover

The Teaching and Learning Center invites you to a fall 2022 book club discussion on Kelly A. Hogan's and Viji Sathy's "Inclusive Teaching: Strategies for Promoting Equity in the College Classroom," published this year by the West Virginia University Press.

The book emphasizes how using explicit attention to structure enhances inclusiveness in both course design and interactions with and between students. The book is a quick read and includes practical teaching tips and steps to increase inclusivity in your existing courses.

Hale Library has ordered an electronic copy of the book, which will be available for your use. Each Friday listed below, we will provide a coffee hour from 8:30-9:20 a.m. on Zoom or an in-person afternoon snack option from 2:30-3:20 p.m. in 307 Hale Library. We will discuss several book chapters in each meeting over the course of the semester in the following schedule:

  • Friday, Sept. 30 — Chapter 1: "Inclusive Teaching as a Mindset" and Chapter 2: "The Value of Structure."
  • Friday, Oct. 28 — Chapter 3: "Designing Your Course and Syllabus with an Inclusive Mind-set" and Chapter 4: "Launching Your Course."
  • Friday, Dec. 2 — Chapter 5: "Classroom Environment and Interactions," Chapter 6: "Inclusive Practices Outside the Classroom" and Chapter 7: "Reflecting and Documenting Your Inclusive Practices."

Please RSVP for the events you will attend. The first five individuals who register will receive a free book.

We look forward to discussing this book with you this semester.
