Students and faculty present at international conference, place second in design competition

Submitted by Derek Clements

A team of architectural engineering and construction science students from Kansas State University took second place in four categories at Architectural Engineering Institute 2021 Virtual Conference Living Buildings: The New Frontier of Integrated Design.

The students, all from the GE Johnson Department of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science, were awarded the silver medal in electrical systems design, structural systems design, construction and building integration.

Team members worked from August through March designing the electrical, mechanical and structural systems for the Georgetown Day School in Washington D.C. After collaborating to come up with an innovative and integrated design, while staying under the allotted construction budget and minimizing the project delivery schedule, they were selected as finalists and presented their design to a panel of judges from the architectural/engineering/construction industry.

Faculty advisers from the department of architectural engineering and construction science in the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering are Derek Clements, assistant professor; Kimberly Kramer, professor; and Katie Loughmiller, assistant professor.

Team members include the following:

Dawson Bailey, Brandon Cook, Melanie Hiraki, Bjorn Jonsson, Calvin Koch, Chelsea Lewis, Kaitlan Muzingo, Kyle Tollefson, all architectural engineering students and Alec Coast, construction science and management

Additionally, three faculty members and three architectural engineering students in the GE Johnson Department of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science presented an undergraduate research project at the virtual conference. The project involved surveying the building, updating the plans, and analysis and recommendations for building envelope, mechanical, electrical, and lighting improvements for the Ottawa County Courthouse in Minneapolis, Kansas. Professor Ray Yunk led the overall project team and worked with senior Ryan Rieger; Instructor Andrew Sneed was the mechanical lead and worked with senior Jacob Martin; and Instructor Jake Hamilton was the electrical lead and worked with senior Eric Ashlock.
