Levitt and Farmer to present 'Meeting Student Needs: Trauma-Informed Pedagogy and Community Building' today

Submitted by Teaching and Learning Center

As part of the Teaching and Learning Center's Professional Development Series, Rachel Levitt, assistant professor of gender, women, and sexuality studies, and Mitzi Farmer, academic advisor for mechanical and nuclear engineering, will present "Meeting Student Needs: Trauma-Informed Pedagogy and Community Building" from noon to 1 p.m. CDT Wednesday, March 24, via Zoom.

Teaching during a global pandemic presents a plethora of challenges. For students, some of the greatest obstacles to learning involve the trauma symptoms they are navigating as well as the isolation that COVID-19 distancing practices have caused. In this workshop, Levitt and Farmer will discuss the impacts of trauma and isolation. Together, they will offer ways to support students through this challenging time with specific practices and activities. Their goal is to help understand the problem, cause, and solution to when students find themselves blocked from learning. Those in attendance will examine what they can do to build community, what they are doing already that puts student's safety first, and what they can do to be more trauma-informed this semester and next.
