College of Agriculture Diversity Programs Office update and fall 2019 events
The Diversity Programs Office in the College of Agriculture has been busy and continues to amass success. We hope you have had a great fall semester thus far as we share with you this September update.
The K-State Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences, known as MANRRS, celebrated MANRRS Week Sept. 23-27 with the theme "#IMPACT." Some events included the MANRRS Corporate Showcase — thanks to our corporate partners for your continued support; the Smithfield Corporate visit; and Community Service #IMPACT Day with Soles4Souls in partnership with Kappa Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Lonnie Hobbs Jr., doctoral student in agriculture economics and Diversity Programs Office graduate assistant, was named a recipient of the 2019 American Royal/Seaboard Foods Scholarship this week. He participated in the American Royal three-day scholarship/community service session Sept. 26-29 in Kansas City, Missouri. Other 2019 K-State College of Agriculture American Royal Scholars/Seaboard Food Scholars are Hannah Frobose, senior in animal sciences and industry; Taylor Nikkel, senior in agriculture economics; and Katelyn Pinkston, senior in agriculture education.
To finish out the 2019 MANRRS week, the fourth annual George Washington Carver Symposium and Awards Dinner was hosted Sunday, Sept. 29, sponsored by Kansas Center for Agriculture Resources and the Environment. The event honors the contributions that George Washington Carver had, and still has, on all of us today.
The symposium is presented in collaboration with the K-State College of Agriculture and its Diversity Programs Office, George Washington Carver Birthplace Association, and the nonprofit cooperating association to the National Park Service at George Washington Carver National Monument. The event included symposium, fireside chat with the 2019 student award recipients, and a dinner and awards banquet. Ernie Minton, dean of the College of Agriculture, greetings. Armogen "Tre" Walker, K-State College of Agriculture alumnus and former linebacker and captain for the Wildcats, served as the keynote speaker. He presented, "The 21st Century Impact of Dr. George Washington Carver." Thanks to the planning committee for your support.
The 2019 award recipients:
- The George Washington Carver Distinguished Service and Innovation Award are presented to community leaders who exemplify the traits of George Washington Carver. Recipients include Jettie Condray, Historian Award; Curtis McClinton Jr., Civic Leader Award; Curtis Pitts, Community Leader Award; and Rina D. Neal, Education Award.
- Student representatives of the Carver Legacy Schools, who will receive the George Washington Carver Spirit of Innovation and Service Awards, include Raymond Thomas, master's student in agriculture economics and MANRRS chapter member, Kansas State University; Stephanie Twohey, Simpson College; Cody Acevedo, Iowa State University; and Tiiwon Siaway, and Tuskegee University.
