Faculty and staff receive Division of Student Life awards

Submitted by Stephanie Jacques

On April 11, the Division of Student Life presented several awards to K-Staters for their outstanding support of students. Barbara Braga, chair of the Student Life Staff Engagement Committee, coordinated the awards nomination process and Pat Bosco, vice president for student life and dean of students, hosted the ceremony and presented the awards.

Awards presented to K-Staters include:

Outstanding unclassified professional: Deana Core, assistant director and transfer coordinator.

In the last eight years, Core has participated in the overhaul of the transfer equivalency tool and creation of transfer pathways, two online resources that assist future transfer students with planning their transfer into K-State. She's strengthened the Transfer Ambassador Program to include 20-25 volunteer students who assist with on-campus recruitment efforts and transition support for future and current students, and also developed and taught K-State's first transfer orientation course, DED 350 Transfer Connections. Core has a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and mass communication from K-State and a Master of Education in higher education with an emphasis in community college leadership from Iowa State University.

Outstanding new unclassified professional: Justin Frederick, assistant dean in student life.

For the last two years, Frederick has worked with many students, primarily in the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Agriculture and the military-connected communities. His areas of supervision include the Center for Advocacy, Response and Education, or CARE, and Non-Traditional and Veteran Student Services. He was selected for and participated in the James R. Coffman Institute in August 2018. Frederick has focused on and intentionally attended conferences in the last two years focusing on education to improve programs for both CARE and Non-Traditional and Veteran Student Services. He is actively involved in the Manhattan area running community and served for one year on the Flint Hills Human Rights Project Board, as an At-Large member. He has a Bachelor of Science in social work from Pittsburg State University and a Master of Science in college student personnel from the University of Central Missouri.

Putting Students First award for Student Life staff: Maggie Borders, program specialist for the McNair Scholars Program and Educational Supportive Services.

Borders primarily helps students with their writing development. She maintains the McNair Scholars Program's Facebook and Twitter accounts. Previously, she worked in the English department teaching expository writing, business writing and literature courses on the short story form and on film adaptations of fiction works. She earned her Masters of Arts in English emphasizing creative nonfiction from K-State in 2012.

Putting Students First award for faculty: Mohammad Hosni, professor of mechanical engineering and director of the University Engineering Alliance.

Hosni joined the faculty in mechanical engineering at Kansas State University in 1991 and in 1993 assumed a leadership role as the director of the Institute for Environmental Research, a multidisciplinary research center at K-State, where he was responsible for the development of research programs in human thermal comfort and indoor air distribution. Hosni served as the director of the center until 2001, when he was named department head of mechanical and nuclear engineering. After serving eight years as the department head, he was appointed as the director of the University Engineering Alliance in 2009. Hosni has served the university, local community and professional organizations in various capacities, including a member of the K-State Presidential Search Committee, a board member and vice president for Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, chair of technical committees, member of international advisory committees and more. His service recognitions include Dedicated Service Award from ASME, Exceptional Service Award from ASHRAE, and the International Educator of the Year Award from K-State.
