Freeland receives first-place awards in Kansas Professional Communicators contest

Submitted by A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications

Gloria Freeland, assistant professor in the College of Arts and Sciences' A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications, received two first-place awards in the 2019 Kansas Professional Communicators contest: one for her personal column "Kansas Snapshots" and one for her specialty article in history. The contest covered entries published in 2018.

Her column entries included "The old table" and "All grown up." Judge's comments included, "Your writing takes everyday life and elevates it to importance. The memories in your parents' empty house brought tears to my eyes. I join you in rejoicing that so many pieces of 'stuff' became treasures in your family."

The historical article was "Wolf House celebrates its sesquicentennial with 1880s talks and tours," published in the March 11, 2018, Manhattan Mercury. It also was published in the March 14, 2018, issue of the Riley Countian. The judge said, "Historical pieces often are difficult to follow and understand, but this article flows nicely and never loses my interest ... Well done!"

The awards were given at the March 23 Kansas Professional Communicators conference at the Gufler Mansion in Emporia.

Freeland also is director of the Huck Boyd National Center for Community Media in the journalism school. She has been writing her column since 2001.
