Losinski receives national interventionist award for research

Submitted by Patrice Scott

Mickey Losinski

Mickey Losinski, associate professor of special education, counseling and student affairs, received the 2019 Council of Children with Behavioral Disorders' Interventionist Award.

Losinski was given the award along with another researcher at the organization's recent business meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana. This award recognizes higher education faculty who have established a coherent line of intervention research with school-age persons with emotional and behavioral disorders in authentic educational environments.

Intervention research improves the outcomes for children and youth, provides teachers/staff/guardians with additional practices and adds to the field's body of science. Thus, an impactful interventionist is one who applies replicable interventions in authentic educational settings that are rooted in a scientific approach.

In his five years at K-State, Losinski has published more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals, presented at national conferences and co-authored four book chapters. His current research involves identifying evidence-based practices for students with emotional and behavioral disorders, mathematics interventions for students with emotional and behavioral disorders, social-emotional learning for students with disabilities, and examining the legal and policy issues on the delivery of special education to students with disabilities.

In addition to several current grant projects, Losinski is active in the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders, the national advocacy organization for children with emotional disturbances. Losinski also serves on the editorial boards of the journals "Exceptional Children," "Behavioral Disorders," "Beyond Behavior," "Intervention in School and Clinic" and the "Journal of Disability Policy Studies."
