K-State joins national first-generation student celebration day

Submitted by Rebeca Paz

The Office of First-generation Students and the First-generation Student Organization are sponsoring a day of activities to join a national celebration for first-generation students on Thursday, Nov. 8.

Join us in celebrating our first-generation students. First-generation students are those whose neither parent nor guardian earned a four-year college degree. They comprise more than 25 percent of K-State's undergraduate students.

The following activities will take place on Nov. 8 in the K-State Student Union courtyard:

  • 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Social media contests and giveaways.
  • 11:30 a.m. to noon: A first-generation student panel will share their stories at K-State and how they navigate their college experience to be successful.
  • Noon to 12:30 p.m.: Cupcakes and hot cider.
  • 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.: Hear the stories and wisdom from a faculty and staff panel who were first in their families to earn a college degree.

Arrow Coffee Co., JP's and Cornerstone Coffee & Bakery will have a "Proud to Be First" special on their menu to join in the celebration.

Thank you to the following departments for your collaboration: Academic Achievement Center, College of Education, Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, Housing and Dining Services, K-State First and the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry.
