K-State student chapter hosts Day of Science event

Submitted by Mary Rankin

The Kansas State University chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers hosted a Dia de Ciencias, or Day of Science, hands-on activity day at Wichita North High School on April 20 to encourage Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, students to study toward careers in engineering and science.

Thirteen K-State engineering students partnered with 10 teachers from Wichita North to offer high school students hands-on sessions for designing gliders launched by an electric air canon, analysis of non-Newtonian fluids and designing load-supporting dot-toothpick bridges. Participants won prizes for the best designs, as well as door prizes.

Absalom Bernal, sophomore in civil engineering, and Jorge Martinez, sophomore in architectural engineering, served as co-chairs for the Dia de Ciencias committee.

AVID is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills.

The College of Engineering Office of Retention, Diversity and Inclusion, and the Multicultural Engineering Program provided sponsorship for the event.
