About Integrated Health Studies

This secondary major provides interdisciplinary, liberal arts training in critical foundational skills and conceptual understanding useful for a career in health and health-adjacent fields. It prepares undergraduate students through coursework, advising and experiences needed for a variety of pre-professional programs and career fields.

"My Integrated Health Studies secondary major has helped me gain a lot of new and varied perspectives on health that my primary major could not. It was so interesting to take classes through different [programs] and look at health and healthcare from a point of view that was different from what I was accustomed to. The courses have allowed me to question current practices in healthcare and see the larger impacts of health and medicine on us as a society. With this secondary major, I am more well-rounded as a pre-health major and my concept of healthcare is more holistic.

Health professions leaders have become increasingly aware of the benefits of training in the humanities and social sciences, and professional schools are looking more intentionally for interpersonal skills grounded in such backgrounds.

  • The AAMC lists among the core competencies recommended for students entering medical school to include social skills, cultural competence, ethical responsibility to self and others, critical thinking, and quantitative reasoning.
  • The U.S. Department of Labor’s O*NET database of occupational information lists a variety of interpersonal skills, such as social perceptiveness, and knowledge from the social sciences, as being important for health fields.
  • More programs are beginning to use assessments such as CASPer to assess social and ethical skills.
  • Students are aware of these trends and are looking for ways both to prepare themselves and to signal their preparedness.
