Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy

ICDD Director Dr. Timothy J. Shaffer is an award winning scholar recognized for bringing research-based insights about complex community problems to diverse audiences. He is a tenured associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Kansas State University as well as Principal Research Specialist with the National Institute for Civil Discourse at the University of Arizona.

During a time that people feel deeply divided in their communities, workplaces, and organizations, it is important to be able to navigate through those perceived and/or real tensions and find understanding or resolution.

Often speaking about civil discourse, democratic participation in strategic planning, deliberative pedagogy, civic professionalism, and group communication, Dr. Shaffer is able to connect with diverse audiences through accessible communication, while presentations are rooted in scholarship and research-based knowledge.
