Extension Workshops for Youth and Adults

K-State Research and Extension continues the historic tradition of organizing public discussion and deliberation as a means of community engagement. Many Extension specialists have been trained in ICDD workshops and have, in turn, developed training for community volunteers to lead and participate in dialogue and deliberation. These opportunities are not limited to adults. Recent programs involving K-12 classes and 4-H Chapters include:

  • Conversations Bootcamp: Youth training in communication skills that facilitators employ to help other participants
  • Community Conversations:  Youth organizing and facilitating public conversations on civic issues using the National Issues Forums model
  • Visual Thinking Strategies: Youth and adult training in this facilitation method that fosters collaborative, inclusive, community-building dialogue using the arts

To inquire about these youth workshop opportunities, please email ICDD or contact ICDD Associate Aliah Mestrovich Seay directly at aliah@k-state.edu.

Extension is building a program for community facilitator volunteers, modeled on the Master Gardener program. A continued successful training for community board members provides foundational knowledge to improve this form of citizen engagement as well:
