Each spring, graduate students in the History Department are invited to apply for the awards and grants listed below.

Harvey Hougen Memorial Scholarship
To be eligible for consideration, the one student shall be: Working on the Kansas History: Journal of the Central Plains publication, with preference to a graduate student. If the publication ceases to exist the scholarship should be awarded to a graduate student in the Department of History, based on academic performance and financial need.
Beach-Young Kansas History Scholarship
The recipient(s) of this scholarship will be an undergraduate or graduate student(s) properly enrolled in the Department of History in the College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University who are specializing in Kansas History. Preference will be given to students who are on the editorial staff of the journal, Kansas History; working on a Kansas-related project under the purview of the Chapman Center for Rural Studies; or completing a report, thesis, or dissertation on a topic specific to Kansas History.
Shirley A. Martin Scholarship
To be eligible for consideration, the students shall be: Graduate students enrolled in the Department of History in the College of Arts and Sciences. The donor and the College of Arts and Sciences are committed to gender equality. It is hoped the funds will promote gender diversity within the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of History. While it is not required criterion, it is the desire of the donors that this fund benefit female students. Gender shall not be the determinative factor. Use of funds will be based on a holistic, individualized assessment of all qualities. The foregoing factors will be considered to the extent legally permissible pursuant to law and regulations applicable to the University and Foundation at the times of scholarship award. While offered at Kansas State University, preference will be given to students specializing in Agricultural and Environmental History.
Cora Stewart Wilcoxon Graduate Fellowship
The purpose of this fellowship is to perpetuate the memory of George Dent Wilcoxon and his mother, Cora Stewart Wilcoxon, and to provide financial assistance to graduate students properly enrolled in the Department of History in the College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University.
Ina Belle (Wilson) Mueller Scholarship for Graduate Research in History
Established by Colonel Harrie Mueller in memory of his wife, this scholarship is awarded to a graduate student whose thesis or dissertation relates to the history of Kansas. The recipients are to be determined by the Head of the Department of History, observing the provisions of this agreement, taking into account the financial needs of the recipients. If no suitable candidates or subject is available at the time the award should be made, such award may be made in subsequent years when candidates and subjects are available. Each recipient will receive a minimum of $1,000 and no more than $1,500 annually.
Robin Higham Military History Graduate Student Research and Travel Fund
Established to honor the achievements of Professor Robin Higham, the department's senior military historian for over thirty-five years. The recipient of this award shall be a student properly enrolled in the Dept. of History in the College of Arts & Sciences at KSU and be a military history graduate history student who (a) has passed the Ph.D. preliminary examination and either (b) is pursuing research in connection with the writing of the Ph.D. dissertation or (c) will benefit from participation in a professional military history conference. Applicants for the award must apply within one calendar year from the day of notification that all Ph.D. preliminary examinations have been successfully completed. Preference is to be given to the support of research over support of participation in conferences.
Leroy E and Mary Sullivan Page Fund for Graduate Students in History
This award was established by the children of Leroy and Mary Page in memory of their parents. Professor Page was the department historian of science for a quarter century; Mary Page was a distinguished nursing educator. The recipient of this award shall be a Kansas State University graduate History student who (a) has passed the Ph.D. preliminary examinations, and (b) must travel to research collections outside the state of Kansas in connection with scholarly research leading to the writing of the Ph.D. dissertation.
The A. Bower Sageser Teaching Award
The Sageser Award recognizes outstanding teaching, or the potential for such, among graduate students in the K-State Department of History and carries a cash prize of up to $1500. Students who have assisted a faculty member in teaching a course should submit a letter of application and a letter of support from those faculty members they have assisted in the current academic year. Students who have taught their own sections should submit a letter of application, a one-page statement about their teaching, a copy of their course syllabi, and copies of student evaluations that include the questions: "How do you rank this course?" and "How do you rank the teaching in this course?" (Comparable questions from the TEVAL or IDEA forms may be substituted.) Letters of support from faculty members for whom you have worked may also be included.
The Colonel Peter Cullen Military History Fellowship
The recipient(s) of this fellowship will be a student(s) properly enrolled in the Department of History in the College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University who is studying military history with preference going to a student who is beginning their doctoral dissertation in military history. This recipient may receive the award for three years as long as they meet the eligibility criteria. If a suitable recipient is not found who meets the above criteria then the fellowship may be awarded to a master's or senior undergraduate student who is studying military history for one year. Preference will be given to a student with financial need.
The Kenneth W. Jones Graduate Student Travel Fund
This award is for graduate students who have passed their Ph.D. preliminary examinations. This fund supports two types of travel: either travel to repositories outside the state of Kansas to do scholarly research leading to the writing of a Ph.D. dissertation; or travel to participate in a conference or conferences outside the state of Kansas that will benefit the applicant professionally. "Repository" is broadly defined and may include the collection of oral histories, and the consultation of private papers, as well as the examination of documentary collections in formal libraries and archives. The award provides up to $500, and applicants must apply within one calendar year from the date of notification that all Ph.D. preliminary exams were successfully completed. Preference will be given to applicants specializing in Asian history and in the history of regions other than the US and Europe. Support for research will be given a higher priority than support for participation in conferences. The funds from the award must be spent within one calendar year from the date of the award's announcement. Applicants must submit a dissertation prospectus or conference participation proposal, a written description (not to exceed three pages typed and double spaced) of the proposed travel and its significance for the student's professional development, and a letter from the applicant's major professor attesting to the importance of the proposed travel for the applicant's professional development.
The Florence M. Hamscher Graduate Research Fund
This award is for graduate students who have passed their Ph.D. preliminary examinations and plan to travel to research collections outside the state of Kansas for dissertation-related research. Applicants for the award must apply within one calendar year from the day of notification that all Ph.D. examinations were successfully completed. The money awarded is to be spent on travel to repositories outside the state of Kansas. "Repository" is broadly defined and may include the collection of oral histories, private papers, or other such sources in addition to documentary collections in formal libraries and archives. The award must be spent within one calendar year of the announcement of the winner, and a report not exceeding three double-spaced pages explaining the research that the recipient accomplished is also required.
The James C. Carey Research and Travel Award
The purpose of this fund is to provide support for graduate student research for theses and dissertations in the form of awards to purchase research materials, to travel to research collections and to travel to professional meetings to present scholarly papers. This award shall be granted to any currently enrolled graduate student in the Department of History at KSU for the purposes described above. All awards will be subject to approval by the Head of the Department of History.
Ralph W. Nyberg - Vanier Family Scholarship
The fund was established in 2019 by Benjamin and Lyndal Nyberg in honor and memory of their son, Ralph Nyberg, who had been a student in the Department. To be eligible for consideration, the students shall be: undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the Department of History in the College of Arts and Sciences, and awards may be renewed. Funds placed in the expendable balance will be awarded as one (1) $2000 scholarship annually for the first five years.
Robert F. Stohlman, Jr. and Vanda R. White American Military History Graduate Research Support Fund
This fund was established in 2020 by Robert F. Stohlman, Jr. and Vanda R. White, for the purpose of providing support to Graduate Research Assistants in the Department of History who have passed their Ph.D. preliminary examinations and are researching American (United States) Military History. Funds can be used for research related administrative costs such as expenses incurred to use archival libraries; purchase of tools and research materials; travel and lodging for trips to repositories within the continental United States to do only dissertation-related research; University tuition expenses, but excluding university fees such as activity, parking, green and health fees.
