Postdoctoral Fellowships
ABE Fellowship Program
The Abe Fellowship Program encourages international multidisciplinary research on topics of pressing global concern. The program fosters the development of a new generation of researchers interested in policy-relevant topics and willing to become key members of a bilateral and global research network. In partnership with the SSRC, the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP) established the Abe Fellowship Program as its flagship program in 1991. The Abe Fellowship Program now includes three core elements: the Abe Fellowship, the Abe Fellowship for Journalists, and the CGP-SSRC Policy Forum.
Founded through the efforts of Shintaro Abe, former Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, the mission of CGP is: to promote collaboration between Japan and the U.S. with the goal of fulfilling shared global responsibility and contributing to improvements in the world’s welfare; and to enhance dialogue and interchange between Japanese and U.S. citizens on a wide range of issues, thereby improving bilateral relations.
The Abe Fellowship Program achieves these goals by supporting high-quality research, building collaborative networks, promoting transnational lines of inquiry, and ensuring that the results of this research reach a wide group of policy makers and the public at large.
American Council of Learned Societies
Fellowships for recent humanities Ph.D. recipients will place 13 recent Ph.D.s from the humanities and humanistic social sciences in two-year staff positions at partnering organizations in government and the nonprofit sector. Fellows will participate in the substantive work of these organizations and receive professional mentoring. The program, made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, aims to demonstrate that the capacities developed in the advanced study of the humanities have wide application, both within and beyond the academy.
Applications must have received their degrees in the last three years and aspire to careers in administration, mangement and public service by choice rather than circumstance.
ACLS, a private, nonprofit federation of 71 national scholarly organizations, is the preeminent representative of American scholarship in the humanities and related social sciences. In 2011, it gave nearly $15 million in fellowship stipends and other awards to 350 scholars in the United States and abroad.
American Institute of Physics and American Physical Society Congressional Science Fellowship
The American Institute of Physics in cooperation with the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) sponsors scientists to spend a year providing analytical expertise and scientific advice to Congress.
The program enables scientists to broaden their experience through direct involvement with the legislative and policy processes.
Fellows gain a perspective which, ideally, will enhance not only their own careers but also the physics community’s ability to more effectively communicate with its representatives in Congress.
Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Academic Diversity
The Berkeley Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program offers postdoctoral research fellowships, faculty mentoring, and eligibility for a hiring incentive to outstanding scholars in all fields whose research, teaching, and service will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity at the University of California.
Cooperative Institute for Climate and Ocean Research Postdoctoral Scholar Fellowship
The Cooperative Institute for Climate and Ocean Research (CICOR) at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution acts a link to harness the scientific and technical expertise at WHOI in service to the missions and goals of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). More specifically, CICOR catalyzes collaborations between NOAA and WHOI on research on the ocean’s role in climate, the coastal ocean, and marine ecosystems. CICOR also provides access for NOAA projects to use WHOI facilities, including research vessels, and manned and unmanned underwater vehicles. CICOR strengthens relationships between the two institutions that have been forged over decades by many WHOI scientists and technicians who have worked with NOAA researchers.
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Postdoctoral Fellowship
(Department of Energy)
The objective of the EERE Postdoctoral Fellowships is to create the next generation of scientific leaders in energy efficiency and renewable energy by attracting the best scientists and engineers to pursue breakthrough technologies in a highly prestigious postdoctoral research program. To meet this objective, EERE Fellows will have access to unique education and training opportunities, top scientists in their field, and state-of-the-art projects and equipment. As a result, innovative technologies will be developed that will have a real impact on the economy by providing energy efficient and affordable technologies; in the environment by providing clean energy technologies; and in the quality of life for all Americans by enhancing their energy choices.
Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship

These two independent research libraries, adjacent to each other in Center City Philadelphia, have complementary collections capable of supporting research in a variety of fields and disciplines relating to the history of America and the Atlantic world from the 17th through the 19th centuries, as well as Mid-Atlantic regional history to the present.
Michigan Society of Fellows
(Humanities, arts, social, physical and life sciences)
The Michigan Society of Fellows, under the auspices of the Rackham Graduate School, was established in 1970 with endowment grants from the Ford Foundation and the Horace H. and Mary Rackham Funds. Each year the Society selects four outstanding applicants for appointment to three-year fellowships in the social, physical, and life sciences, and in the professional schools.
In 2007 the Mellon Foundation awarded a grant to add four Mellon Fellows annually in the humanities, expanding the number of fellowships awarded each year from four to eight. The newly appointed Postdoctoral Fellows join a unique interdisciplinary community composed of their peers as well as the Senior Fellows of the Society, who include many of the University’s leading scholars. Alumni Fellows of the Society have gone on to become distinguished scholars at institutions around the world. The Chair of the Society is Donald S. Lopez, Jr., Arthur E. Link Distinguished University Professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan.
