What does being an ID3A affiliate mean to you?
Being a member of ID3A means an opportunity to step out of my research bubble and explore what some of my colleagues are doing across the university. Without ID3A, I might never have connected with a plant pathologist to learn how our two different specialties intersect and align. I have been interested in learning more about how my research can relate to or benefit different areas within agriculture, and now I have that opportunity.
How did you learn about ID3A, and why did you decide to become an affiliate?
When I first learned about ID3A and the affiliate program, it wasn't quite off the ground yet. Over time, I ended up speaking with Trevor Hefley, a co-director of the institute, as well as other members of the affiliate program who are actively involved with the institute. Initially, when I heard about it, I wasn't sure if there would be a place for me and my skills. However, after having those conversations and learning more about it, I realized that there is a place for everyone at the institute, regardless of their background.
What do you hope to see come from the institute moving forward?
I hope the institute will continue to offer opportunities for affiliates to connect and mingle. The monthly mixers provide a space for individuals to discuss their respective disciplines and encourage them to build connections and an understanding that, just because they aren’t directly involved with agriculture in any facet, does not mean they are incapable of providing valuable knowledge and skills that could benefit the industry. ID3A is in a unique position to bring together faculty members and provide them with experiences that not everyone has access to on a regular basis.
What excites you most about joining ID3A?
Something I value most is the opportunity to learn something new continuously. I greatly enjoy meeting with other professionals within political science, as well as those from different industries. It can be very easy to get stuck in a bubble and stick with the people you know, never expanding your professional connections beyond your department. What excites me most is the opportunity to build connections outside my department and discover new ways my knowledge and skills can be used to help others.
