About the series:

Mr. Joe Tiao, originally from Taiwan, was studying economics in graduate school in Japan before joining Kansas State University in the 1970s. After he graduated from K-State with a master's degree in computer science, Mr. Tiao was an instructor and research associate in the department of agricultural economics at K-State when both economics and agricultural economics were in the same department. Mr. Tiao taught a course related to the economics of traffic control and transportation until the 1980s. In the early 1990s, Mr. Tiao started his real estate rental business. He is now the owner and manager of an apartment building company in Manhattan, Kansas.

Serving as a member on the KSU Foundation Board of Trustees, Mr. Tiao has been dedicated to helping the university community, including the department of economics. The department has benefited from the Joe Tiao Seminar Room, equipped with modern furniture and technology. This renovation was made possible by a generous contribution from Mr. Tiao in 2002-2003.

Motivated by his interest in contemporary economic issues and his dedication to promoting democracy and social justice, Mr. Tiao has continued to support the department of economics by setting up this lecture series. The Joe Tiao Lecture Series, initiated in 2006, enables the department to bring two internationally acclaimed economists to campus each year. Each Tiao Lecturer presents two lectures at K-State: a public lecture on an economics issue of current interest and a more technical seminar in the department.
