The Career Center facilitates the career readiness of all students throughout the K-State community. Through personalized advising, resume and interview support, and experiential learning guidance, the Career Center helps Wildcats connect their academic experiences to meaningful careers. It also serves as a bridge between students and employers by hosting career fairs, networking events, and on-campus recruiting, ensuring students have access to real-world opportunities. Peer Advisors play an important role in this mission by serving as peer educators who assist students with career exploration, professional document development, and connecting academic programs with career goals.

Job Summary

Peer Advisors are trained to support fellow K-State students through the career development process. In this role, Peer Advisors provide resume and cover letter feedback, assist with internship and job searches, and help students navigate career resources such as Handshake.

Peer Advisors primarily support students through drop-in advising services and scheduled appointments, offering both quick feedback and in-depth guidance on career preparation materials. They also collaborate with Career Center staff on projects, events, and initiatives that support student career readiness across campus.

This role typically requires a commitment of approximately 10 hours per week during the academic year and includes ongoing training and professional development opportunities.

  • Comfort providing peer-to-peer guidance and feedback.
  • Desire to support and empower fellow students in their career development.

Responsibilities

  • Provide peer advising support to students through drop-in advising and scheduled appointments, assisting with resumes, cover letters, CVs, internship searches, and on-campus job searches.
  • Assist students with navigating Handshake, including creating accounts, scheduling appointments, and accessing Career Center services.
  • Maintain appointment availability by coordinating Outlook calendar scheduling with Handshake and preparing for advising sessions by reviewing student materials in advance.
  • Support Career Center initiatives and projects, including career fairs, workshops, outreach presentations, and other programming, as requested by staff.
  • Foster a welcoming and supportive advising environment while adapting communication style to meet the needs of all students.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.

Training and Professional Development

Career Specialists participate in a structured training program designed to build advising and career development skills. Training topics include:

  • Communication and helping skills
  • Career development and decision-making theory
  • Resume and cover letter development
  • Online career resources
  • Public speaking and leadership development
  • Career Center operations
  • Ongoing on-the-job learning includes shadowing experienced staff and participating in weekly team meetings.

Hourly Wage: $10.00, with a $0.50 wage increase each year based on continued employment and satisfactory performance.
