Building History

The Berney Family Welcome Center, located on the east side of Memorial Stadium, serves as a gateway to the university's rich heritage and traditions. Memorial Stadium was constructed in 1924 to honor K-State students and alumni who lost their lives serving in World War I. The design of the stadium was intended to complement the architectural style of Nichols Hall (formerly known as Nichols Gymnasium) and was made possible through a community effort. Students and faculty contributed $157,000, while the community raised $62,500 to help fund the stadium, which had an estimated total cost of $500,000.

This architectural influence can also be seen in the West Stadium Center and the Vanier Football Complex at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Memorial Stadium has a long history as an athletic venue for K-State football, hosting its inaugural game against Washburn University in 1922. Today, the Berney Family Welcome Center acts as a central hub for prospective, new and current students, connecting them with New Student Services, Recruitment and Admissions and the Career Center.
