Interactive Assessment Dashboards

Interactive Assessment Dashboards combine data from various sources, including direct and indirect assessments, to provide valuable insights for both internal and external stakeholders. Powered by Microsoft Power BI, these dashboards offer interactive features that allow users to explore, filter, and analyze assessment data from multiple perspectives.

How Direct Assessment Dashboards Work

This dashboard demonstrates how direct assessment data can be collected, analyzed, and used to support continuous improvement efforts.

How Direct Assessment Data Is Collected

Canvas provides several tools that allow faculty to assess student learning as part of their regular grading process. Rather than collecting assessment results separately, faculty can evaluate student work using outcomes and rubrics already associated with course assignments.

For assessment purposes, broad program learning outcomes are often divided into smaller, measurable components. For example, a Written Communication outcome might include:

  • Content
  • Organization and Structure
  • Grammar and Mechanics
  • Audience Awareness

Breaking outcomes into smaller components provides more detailed information and helps programs identify specific areas where students excel or may need additional support.

Assessment results are automatically stored over time, allowing programs to examine trends across courses, semesters, and student populations.

Turning Assessment Data into Action

While Canvas captures assessment data, Power BI transforms that information into interactive dashboards that support exploration and decision making.

Power BI can combine direct assessment results with other institutional data sources, including:

  • Student survey responses
  • Demographic information
  • GPA and academic performance
  • Retention and graduation metrics

By bringing these data sources together, programs can investigate questions about student learning, compare outcomes across groups, and identify opportunities for improvement.

Benefits of Interactive Assessment Dashboards

Interactive dashboards help programs:

  • Reduce manual data collection and reporting efforts
  • Access assessment results in a timely manner
  • Explore trends across multiple student populations
  • Conduct longitudinal analyses over time
  • Focus conversations on improvement and student learning

By streamlining assessment processes and providing meaningful visualizations, programs can spend less time managing data and more time using evidence to improve student success.
