Armed Forces Residency Waiver Benefit

This is in compliance with the State of Kansas law and the federal Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014.

Service members, spouses and dependents

Who's eligible

Currently serving members in the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard), spouses and dependent children who are:

  • Active Duty
  • Reserves
  • Kansas Army or Kansas Air National Guard

Process

  1. Complete Military Personnel and Family Members form (pdf), AND the following:
  2. Copy of current orders.
  3. If a spouse or dependent child, also provide documentation verifying relationship to current member of the Armed Forces (i.e. birth certificate, marriage certificate, tax returns) if not already listed on one of the aforementioned documents.
  4. Submit documentation to Office of Recruitment and Admissions at k-state@k-state.edu.

If ROTC, include a copy of your current contract for enlistment or reenlistment in the Armed Forces.

To keep residency waiver

Maintain continuous enrollment (except summer terms and breaks).

Prior-service veterans, spouses and dependents

Who’s eligible

Veterans, spouses, and dependent children who meet at least one of the following three conditions:

  • Currently eligible to receive a VA educational benefit (i.e. GI Bill® Chapters 30, 31, 33, 35, 1606); or
  • Veteran was permanently stationed in Kansas during service in the Armed Forces; or
  • Veteran had established bona fide Kansas residency prior to joining the Armed Forces

AND are living in Kansas while attending K-State

AND who submit a letter of intent to establish residence in Kansas.

Process

Currently eligible to receive VA education benefits:

  1. Update your "current address" in KSIS to a Kansas address.
  2. Complete and submit Eligible Military Veterans and Family Members form (pdf), AND one of the following:
    1. VA GI Bill® Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
    2. Statement of Benefits (eBenefits page)
  3. If a spouse or dependent child, also provide documentation verifying relationship to the veteran (i.e. birth certificate, marriage certificate, tax returns) if not already listed on one of the aforementioned documents.
  4. Submit documentation to Office of Recruitment and Admissions at k-state@k-state.edu.

Note: It is not a requirement to use the VA educational benefit to receive the residency waiver. The waiver continues even after the benefit has been exhausted with continuous enrollment.

Additionally, the Office of Veterans Affairs will have a separate process to utilize your VA education benefits. Please visit the K-State Veterans Affairs website for instruction and contact information.

Kansas duty station or prior Kansas resident:

  1. Update your "current address" in KSIS to a Kansas address.
  2. Complete and submit Eligible Kansas Military Veterans and Family Members form, AND one of the following:
    1. DD-214 or other documentation showing proof of prior Kansas residency
    2. Any official military documents showing a Kansas location as a permanent duty station
  3. If a spouse or dependent child, also provide documentation verifying relationship to the veteran (i.e. birth certificate, tax returns) if not already listed on one of the aforementioned documents.
  4. Submit documentation to Office of Recruitment and Admissions at k-state@k-state.edu.

To keep residency status

Maintain continuous enrollment (except summer terms & breaks), AND
Maintain physical presence residence in Kansas during enrollment.
