Deferred Maintenance Project
The university is now accepting proposals to address deferred maintenance in fiscal year 2025, which includes proposals addressing research space innovation in alignment with the Next-Gen K-State strategic plan.
- Deferred maintenance refers to the backlog of past due maintenance and renewal needs for building systems and components.
- In alignment with the deferred maintenance proposal process but made possible by the Next-Gen K-State strategic plan funds, the university will provide up to $500,000 in matching dollars for successful proposals to improve core/shared use research space, upgrading fixed equipment and/or systems within university laboratory spaces.
Proposal Criteria
- 1:1 funding match required. The match funding cannot be from state general fund sources.
- Total project scope less than $1 million preferred.
- Addresses maintenance or improvements in mission critical buildings.
- Meet the definition of deferred maintenance per Kansas Board of Regents policy Chapter II, Section E.4.a.ii.
- Accomplish at least one of the following university and Kansas Board of Regents initiatives:
- Improves building infrastructure/maintenance needs (facility condition index).
- Improve condition of core/shared use research space (designated with location type of 200-299), including fixed equipment and/or lab systems (contact ord@k-state.edu to confirm if location qualifies).
- Improve utilization of a space, lab, classroom or student services space.
- Address life safety, ADA or code-related issue.
- Aligns with education, research or service mission.
- Aligns with NextGen Strategic Plans Imperative(s).
Proposal Process
Cost estimate requests are due March 4, 2024, and the submission deadline is April 15, 2024. Details for submission are below.

- Proposals must include a cost estimate from Campus Planning and Project Management. Requests for cost estimates should be submitted by March 4, specifically mentioning deferred maintenance 1:1 Match.

April 15, 2024
- Proposals utilizing the proposal form template must be submitted by college or major unit leaders to Tara Fronce at tarap@k-state.edu by the deadline.
- Colleges or major units submitting multiple proposal should submit a brief cover letter prioritizing the projects at the college/major unit level.
