We are K-State
We live by the purple rule. For K-Staters, that means a firmly held dedication to fostering a welcoming atmosphere in which everyone feels supported and empowered to grow, take intellectual risks, and live life to the fullest.
Our Mission
The mission of Kansas State University is to foster excellent teaching, research and service that develop a highly skilled and educated citizenry necessary to advancing the well-being of Kansas, the nation and the international community. The university embraces all, encourages engagement and is committed to the discovery of knowledge, the education of undergraduate and graduate students, and improvement in the quality of life and standard of living of those we serve.
The Next-Gen K-State Vision
Under the university's strategic plan, K-State is committed to lead the nation as a next-generation land-grant university – setting the standard for inspiring learning, creativity, discovery and engagement that positively impacts society and transforms lives in Kansas and around the world.
Our History
In 1858, Bluemont Central College, a private institution, opened in Manhattan, Kansas, and it was only a few short years later that Kansas was admitted to the Union. Nearly immediately, efforts began to establish a state university, spurred by the passing of the Morrill Act in 1862, which allowed for the creation of land-grant colleges in eligible U.S. territories. Bluemont Central College was reimagined and reintroduced as Kansas State Agricultural College, or KSAC, in 1863, serving as the nation's first operational land-grant university.
Ultimately, the university's name evolved in 1931 to the Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science. In 1959, the current name of Kansas State University was officially adopted.
As a land-grant university, K-State has always been rooted in a mission of teaching agriculture, science, military science and engineering to any interested student, opening up educational access and opportunity to all. Additionally, through a commitment to service, the university has always sought to better the lives of others through research and engagement.
For more than 150 years, we have held true to our land-grant mission. Whether it means making a stranger feel welcome on campus, cheering on a teammate or developing a vaccine that saves lives, we are committed to teaching, research and service for the betterment of all.
Living our Mission with Responsibility and Care
At K-State, we believe that it is important to engage in our mission with great care and responsibility, as we recognize that the land that our great university rests upon, appropriated under the 1862 Morrill Act, did not come without a price. The dispossession of Indigenous peoples and nations from their lands is a history undeniably linked to the land-grant heritage — one that compels us every day to live out our mission in a way that builds a better future for all.
