Excellence by design: Interior design program recognized in U.S. Top 10

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

The interior design program at Kansas State University has been ranked in the Top 10 in the United States.

The ranking, published in the November/December issue of DesignIntelligence, is based on a survey of principals, design directors and human resource directors from 392 professional practice organizations in the United States. They were asked to name the schools from which they've had the best experience hiring employees.

The 2013 list of the top bachelor's programs in interior design places Kansas State University in a shared ranking of eighth along with Boston Architectural College, Cornell University and Parsons The New School for Design.

Interior design is a field that addresses technical, functional and aesthetic concerns in the design and modification of interior environments. In addition, the College of Human Ecology interior design program emphasizes design to support and enhance the psychological and physiological well-being of building users.

"Our graduates experience tremendous employment opportunities and success in multidisciplinary architecture and design firms," said Migette Kaup, associate professor in the department of apparel, textiles and interior design and program coordinator. "They are hired by top architecture and design firms in the Midwest and around the country."

DesignIntelligence is published by the Design Futures Council, a think-tank of industry leaders dedicated to anticipating and preparing for future trends in architecture and design. The council conducts the survey annually.

Also ranked by DesignIntelligence are graduate and undergraduate schools in architecture, landscape architecture and industrial design.
