K-State Theatre's 2014 - 2015 Season

Main Stage Season

Fall Semester 2014

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike

Oct. 9-11; 16-19
By Christopher Durang
Directed by Jerry Jay Cranford
Chapman Theatre

Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home in Bucks County, PA, where they bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. Suddenly, their movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike. Old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. Also on the scene are sassy maid Cassandra, who can predict the future, and a lovely young aspiring actress named Nina, whose prettiness somewhat worries the imperious Masha.

Nov. 6-8; 13-16
By Stephen Sondheim
Directed by Charlotte MacFarland; Dr. Paul Hunt, Musical Director; Dr. Amy Rosine, Vocal Director
Chapman Theatre

'Sweeney Todd' is a musical thriller about a 19th century London barber who goes on a murderous rampage. Todd was unjustly incarcerated in a penal colony for 15 years. However, when the show begins, Todd has managed to return to London and has come seeking revenge. He rents a room over the shop of Mrs. Lovett, the proprietress of a struggling pie shop. Todd's thirst for blood soon expands to include not only the judge but also his unfortunate customers.

Enjoying the safety of their junkyard town, the people of Bustown happily wait for The Driver to return. But Axel and Cressida can’t stop thinking about Otherness. With a chain of keys in close reach, how long will they continue to wait? A vibrant exploration of small town life, Bustown questions the desperate move young people make to the city and the impact it has on the people and places they leave behind.

You Can’t Take it with You

April 23-25; April 30-May 3, 2015
by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart
Directed by TBA
Chapman Theatre

At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. In contrast to these delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys. The plot shows how Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are invited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question.

Remaining Second Stage (Purple Masque) Season
Fall 2014

Miss Julie

Oct. 23-25, 2014
By August Strindberg
Directed by Fatmah Al-Qadfan
Purple Masque

In this new adaptation of Strindberg's classic drama, mistress of the house, Miss Julie, and her servant play a dangerous game of seduction in an effort to relieve themselves of their trapped existences. Using everything in their arsenals from sex to money, the two battle each other in a struggle for power and escape.

Spring 2015

Ebony Theatre: By the Way, Meet Vera Stark

Feb. 19-21, 2015
By Lynn Nottage
Directed by Hannah Miller, Purple Masque

Vera Stark is a budding actress in an era where the only roles for African-American women are maids. When she is cast in the same Southern epic as her employer, an aging star grasping at her dwindling career, sparks fly. A hilarious satire of race in the glamorous days of Old Hollywood.

No Exit

April 16-18, 2015
By Jean Paul Sartre
Translated from French by Logan Jones
Directed by Logan Jones
Purple Masque

Two women and one man are locked up together for eternity in one hideous room in hell. The windows are bricked up; there are no mirrors; the electric lights can never be turned off; and there is no exit. The irony of this hell is that its torture is not of the rack and fire, but of the burning humiliation of each soul as it is stripped of its pretenses by the cruel curiosity of the damned. Here the soul is shorn of secrecy, and even the blackest deeds are mercilessly exposed to the fierce light of hell. It is an eternal torment.
