HOW TO: Add Mediasite Content to K-State Online Modules

There are two options for adding a Mediasite presentation to your course in K-State Online Canvas: one by one, or as a video collection. The method you choose depends on the pedagogical approach you wish to take with your course.

Option One: Add presentations one at a time

The following describes how to add a single presentation to a content page within a K-State Online Canvas module.

  1. In K-State Online Canvas, navigate to the module where you want to place your Mediasite content, for example, "Module 1"

  2. In Module 1, select the + button, choose Content Page, and then choose [New Page]

  3. Provide a name for the page, specify your indentation preference (optional), then select Add Item
    Add Item to Module 1

  4. Select the name of the newly created content page to view it, and then select Edit in the top-right corner

  5. In the Canvas rich content editor, select the More External Tools button that looks like a blue down-arrow or "V" and select Mediasite
    Canvas Rich Content Editor

  6. Select Presentation to add an individual presentation to the page

  7. You can wait for your most recent presentations to load, or you can search for a presentation by name. To search, type the query in the search bar and press the Enter/Return key on your keyboard

Pro tip: to display all of your content, select the search bar and press the Enter/Return key on your keyboard to submit an empty search query
    Embed content from Mediasite

  8. Find the presentation you want to insert into the page, then click on the Embed button and select one of the following options:

"Presentation Link" simply inserts a text-based link containing the name of the presentation.

"Abstract Only" inserts the title of the presentation which will open the presentation when clicked, any metadata about the presentation such as the description or presenter information (if available), and the presentation thumbnail image.

"Player Only" inserts an embedded player so the presentation can be viewed directly on the page.

"Abstract + Player" will insert the abstract with the embedded player below the abstract.

Note: if you see a button called Make Viewable, the presentation's visibility is currently set to Private. If the presentation is set to Private, you will be able to view it, but your students will receive an error saying the presentation is unavailable. Select Make Viewable to set your presentation's visibility to Viewable and enable the Embed button.

  9. Select Save to commit your edits and preview the page. You can modify the content by selecting Edit again and making further changes in the rich content editor.

Remember to publish your new page as well as your module in K-State Online Canvas so students will be able to view them.

Option Two: Embed a collection of presentations

The following describes how to embed a collection of Mediasite presentations in a content page within a K-State Online Canvas module. Collections can include a list of presentations in a Mediasite Channel, or a catalog of presentations from a Mediasite shared folder.

  1. In K-State Online Canvas, navigate to the module where you want to place your Mediasite content, for example, "Module 1"

  2. In Module 1, select the + button and choose Content Page, and then choose [New Page]

  6. Select Collection to add a collection of presentations to the page

  7. You can wait for your most recent collections to load, or you can search for a Mediasite Channel or shared folder catalog by name. To search, type the query in the search bar and press the Enter/Return key on your keyboard. Shared folder catalogs typically have the same name as their subscribed folder.

Pro tip: to display all of your collections, select the search bar and press the Enter/Return key on your keyboard to submit an empty search query
    Embed content from Mediasite

  8. Find the collection you want to insert into the page, then select Embed and choose either "Link" or "Embed."

"Link" inserts the name of the collection into the page as a clickable link to view the colleciton of presentations.

"Embed" will embed the collection directly into the page.

  9. Select Save to commit your edits and preview the page.

Remember to publish your new page as well as your module in K-State Online Canvas so students will be able to view them. Additionally, remember to set the status of your Mediasite presentations to Viewable - if a presentation in a Mediasite video collection is set to Private, your students will not see it in the collection listing.
