Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

Guideline #20

Animal Procurement

The Public Health Service Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (PHS Policy) and the USDA Animal Welfare Regulations require appropriate documentation and veterinary oversight of all animals used in research, teaching and testing. This includes adequate justification to the IACUC for the specific species and number of animals requested for use. In order to meet this required oversight, Kansas State University is implementing the following guideline:

Prior to the acquisition or procurement of any vertebrate animal intended to be used for research, teaching or testing, the Principle Investigator must first:

  • Have an approved IACUC protocol for the specified animals.

“OR”

  • Written consent to utilize another approved IACUC protocol, such as a Comparative Medicine Group animal holding protocol.

If you have questions or concerns about the procurement of vertebrate animals, contact either:

The Comparative Medicine Group (CMG) – 532-5640

The University Research Compliance Office (URCO) – 532-3224
