CNS is responsible for the installation, day-to-day maintenance, and administration of the campus data network. Use of the campus network is essentially free to all campus groups; CNS does not charge on a monthly basis for any Ethernet network connections. The use of the network must be consistent with the education, research, and service missions of the university. See K-State's Information Technology Usage Policy. Three considerations limit individual or departmental uses of the campus network to provide information to the general public:
For each building connected to the campus data network, an "entry point" device is managed by CNS to monitor for problems on the local network. In general, CNS has paid for the installation of an entry-point network hub or switch in each campus building, but it has been the responsibility of departments to pay for the distribution network and any additional hubs required within their building. CNS will install and maintain for life those additional hubs for a one-time charge of $75 per port. The CNS network staff monitors the operation of the campus network backbone between the hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. No definitive services are available beyond these hours, although staff members are often available to fix network problems during these off-hours. Administration of the local segments is managed under the following general policies:
