#33 Offer substitutes
Basic, ages 2-16
When a child is misbehaving with something, provide a similar but more acceptable replacement. Teach children to find acceptable ways to act on their interests.

Example:
A 3-year-old hits the kitchen wall with his father's hammer. His parents replace the real hammer with one made of plastic. They also provide a small toy workbench containing dowels that can be hammered like nails.
